It is easy to get in trouble on Facebook or any other type of social media sites. A woman in Detroit was tossed off of a jury after a Facebook post.
All the ways Facebook Gets Users in Trouble
So, people can get fired, get put in jail, and now tossed from a jury for Facebook status updates. The woman on jury, Hadley Jons, posted that the defendant was guilty on her Facebook account. Unfortunately for her and the defendant, the trial wasn’t over. In fact, Jons is actually in danger of being found in contempt on Thursday when she goes back to the circuit court in Macomb County according to Yahoo News.
The case in question was about a defendant who had resisted arrest. Her Facebook status was posted on August 11, which was a day off from the trial, and at that point, the prosecution had not even completed its case. Jons wrote, "gonna be fun to tell the defendant they're guilty."
This is so not a good idea when you are on a jury. Jaxon Goodman, the son of the defenselawyer, actually found the status update, and brought it to the lawyer’s attention. The next day, Jons was replaced with an alternate on the jury. The defense lawyer, Saleema Sheikh, actually wants Jons to serve some jail time over her offense.
Is this too far? Should Jons have to spend some days in jail because of her Facebook indiscretion? By the way, the defendant was found guilty of a felony even without Jons serving on the jury.
